Firriato - Harmonium Nero d'Avola
Pairing Suggestions
Firriato - Harmonium Nero d'Avola (85 TSW)
This wine is made from a blend of 3 different cru Nero d 'Avola vineyards located in the province of Trapani. The vineyard with a North-Eastern location (Cru della Ferla), a Southern location (Cru della Beccaccia), and a South-Eastern location (Cru della Lepre) all at an altitude of around 300 meters.
The soil type of the vineyards is clayey with lots of sludge that is rich in minerals. The vineyards are planted with a planting density between 5,000 to 5,500 plants per hectare.
The grapes are picked by hand from each vineyard, from around the beginning of September to mid-September. The fermentation of the grapes from the 3 cru vineyards is done separately per vineyard for a period of approximately 12 days at a temperature of 24 to 26ºC.
The aging of the various cru wines is also completely separate for a period of 10 months in French and American oak barriques. After maturing, the wine is carefully blended and the wine first develops for a period of 6 months in the bottle in the cellars of the domain.
My notes:
In the glass a deep inky red color.
On the medium++ nose aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries and stewed plums with hints of sweet oak spices, dark chocolate, cinnamon and herbs.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with medium acidity and soft tannins. This wine is too chewy and sweet for me but there will be a large group who will love this ‘light sweet Amarone’ style red.
Will be better with food like veal, bay leaf and stew.
