Finca San Blas - Garnacha 2019 (86 TSW)
A Garnacha wine from Utiel - Requena, in the province of Valencia.
Finca San Blas is a wine producer of the D.O.P. Utiel-Requena (Valencia). As a pioneer, the bodega was one of the first to believe in the potential of the native Bobal grape to make quality wines and vineyards and varieties such as Merseguera or Garnacha. The winemaker, Nicolás Sánchez has innovated by planting varieties never planted before or by implementing methods that have never been used in the region. The bodega makes wines with the character of the terroir but extremely refined, silky and elegant. All wines of the winery have a golden medal obtained at the prestigious French competition International Challenge from Gilbert & Gaillard.
The region has rainy autumns and warm springs that promote flowering and fruit set, and dry, sunny summers with very marked temperature variations between day and night that ensure that the grapes ripen slowly.
The farm has a total of 75 hectares of vineyards, conveniently distributed over gentle slopes and valleys. One of the latest wines from the Finca San Blas de Requena plots is this red Garnacha which is surprisingly faithful to the variety. After careful fieldwork, Nicolás Sánchez selects only those bunches that match the profile of the wine he wants to build. After eight months of aging in oak barrels.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a medium(+) intense cherry red color.
On the medium nose aromas of red currants, ripe strawberries and cherries with hints of cedar and smoke.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium acidity and medium(+) tannins. Flavours of red and black fruit, balsamico and a medium length finish. Would be better to taste this one in summer..light cooled.
This wine combines well with all kinds of red meat and game, spicy and spicy stews, rice dishes, pasta, matured cheeses of medium intensity, foie gras, pâtés, cold cuts and dark chocolate.
