Fattoria San Giuliano - Barbaresco 2009
Fattoria San Giuliano - Barbaresco 2009 (89 TSW)
100% Nebbiolo from Barbaresco DOCG.
About the wine:
Fermented in stainless steel. The cap was punched down twice a day for a period of 7-10 days. Part of the wine aged in 600/1,500 liter Slavonian oak casks and part in medium-toasted barrels for 18-24 months. After racking and blending together, the wine was bottled and aged for an additional 6 months prior to release.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a medium ruby red color with brick edges.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of cherry compote, plums and herbs with hints of liquorice, mushrooms, smoke and minty hints.
On the palate dry, medium(++) bodied with medium acidity and smooth tannins. Flavours are a recall of the nose with a medium length finish.
To pair with lamb, game, beef, pasta and aged cheeses.
San Giuliano is a family owned estate, headed by Giulio Pastura and his wife, Mariella, who do nearly all the winemaking and vineyard work themselves. The vineyard itself has been intricately cultivated, consisting of 15 acres of Moscato, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and Brachetto in the zones of Roero and Neive. Opportunely placed to benefit from excellent exposure to southern sunlight and glancing breezes, the vines are robust and distinctive, ranging from 15 to 60 years old. The wines of the San Giuliano estate are expressive of the passion and deep personal involvement that goes into their creation.
