Emrich-Schönleber - Riesling trocken 2015 (87 TSW)
Today we leave the Italian road to taste this entry level Riesling from Emrich-Schönleber. A very good producer from the Nahe region.
The town of Monzingen is located halfway along the river Nahe. The Nahe itself flows into the Rhine at Bad Kreuznach. At Monzingen, the soil mainly consists of: slate, basalt and quartz, the ideal substrate for the queen of white grapes: the Riesling.
The grapes are only picked by hand at the end of September in early October. and then undergo a cold fermentation. This has the advantage that more aromas will be retained in the wine. The wines are aged in large used 1000 liter and 2800 liter wooden barrels and in steel tanks. Sulfur and filtering is applied on a minimal basis.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color.
On the medium nose aromas of citrus, apricot and apple with a swiff of petrol, herbs and wet stone.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with very nice integrated acidity. Lively and fresh but also soft and round with a recall of flavors on the nose. Medium length lemon finish.
