Elena Fucci - Titolo 2015 (90 TSW)
No writer could have better invented the story of Elena Fucci and her wine Titolo. Elena grew up in a house that stood amidst her grandfather's vineyards. Like her brothers, she wanted to study and leave the rather lonely area. When the first buyers came to the door to visit the vineyards, she changed her mind, convinced grandfather and father to keep the vineyards, commuted some time between her university in Pisa and Basilicata, came back as a doctor of oenology and founded a vineyard where she produced only one wine. And what a guy! Titolo. For years one of the highest awarded wines in Italy.
The Titolo Tower is a house on the outskirts of Barile, in the North of Basilicata, immersed between vineyard and olive groves that have been tended to for 4 generations.
About the wine:
Being one of the latests harvests in Italy; according to the weather, it may begin at the end of October or the beginning of November.
Positioned at the foot of Mount Vulture (ancient extinct volcano), in the village of Barile, the heart of production from the Aglianico del Vulture, one of the most suitable areas with a terroir and a unique microclimate
After harvesting the whole grapes are then put into steel tanks for the alcoholic fermentation (maceration lasts the same amount of time as fermentation). Afterward the ‘must’ is ‘drawn off’ and the dregs are soft pressed. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barriques of 200 l. (50% new) for a total of 12 months. Additional aging takes place in bottles for 12 more months before release.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep ruby red color with garnet rim.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of plums syrup, sweet black cherries and spices with hints of dried flowers, herbs, liquorice and chocolate.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with medium(+) acidity and medium(+) ripe tannins. Warm and round mouthfeel with ripe cherries, plums, herbs, spices and cigar box. Well structured with a long balsamico finish. Opened at the start of it's drinking window but can age some more years easily.
