El Vinculo – Pesquera group – Alejairen 2015 (88 tsomw points)
100% Airén grapes
New in the assortment of the Pesquera group is their first white wine, Alejairen. A white wine produced by the winery El Vínculo, in Campo de Criptana (Ciudad Real), within D.O. La Mancha. El Vínculo is one of the 4 wineries of Grupo Pesquera. Grupo Pesquera is the wine legacy left by Alejandro Fernández, an oenologist of reference in Ribera del Duero for 4 decades, and still at the forefront of the winery, supervising its vineyards each day, at his over 80 years of age.
The winery El Vínculo is located in a typical building from La Mancha, converted into a modern winery in 1999.They have old Tempranillo vineyards, of the best sites in the area. Therefore, they can make outstanding wines with a limited production, thus becoming a great reference in this area.
Alejairén is a white wine made with Airén from vineyards located in Pago de la Golosa, at around 700 metres of altitude on soils that are a mixture of clay and sand. Once the grapes are harvested manually, they are taken to the winery and destemmed. After a slight pressing, the must ferments in stainless steel deposits at a controlled temperature. After the fermentation, the wine spends 24 months in American oak barrels, and rests another 6 months in the bottle before going on the market.
My tasting notes:
In the glass an intense golden yellow color with orange rim.
On the nose intense aromas of vanilla, apricot, tropical fruit with hints of oak, yeast and lemon zest.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with nice waxy round mouthfeel but also a nice acidity and freshness. Flavours of pear, apple, toast, apricot and hazelnuts. The finish is long and soft in the mouth with almond hints.
