Edetària - Selecció Blanco 2016 (90 TSW)
Garnacha blanca from DO Terra Alta.
This wine is made with 100% garnacha blanca from old vines -60 years old- in “panal” soils (fossilized sand dunes) with extremely low yields. Grapes are fermented in French oak 500 l. barrels and then aged for 8 months.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of peach, pineapple and orangezest with hints of almond, nuts, butter and spicy vanilla.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium acidity and freshness. Round mouthfeel with a nice spicy almond finish. Don't drink too cold. A bit warmed up makes shows more complexity.
About the winery:
Edetària is an ambitious winery from the Terra Alta region, in Catalonia, 40 km south of Priorat. The driving force and owner is Joan Àngel Lliberia, whose father was a winegrower, and grandfather an enologist, in other words, wine is in his blood.
He himself worked as a bio-engineer for various domestic and foreign producers, before having his own modern winery built in 2003 in his hometown, Gandesa. An excellent basis was available.
In the first place, the climate of Terra Alta: sunny, warm, but thanks to the altitude of the vineyards - on average 500 m - the wines also have sufficient freshness. In addition, a large part of the 30 hectares of vineyards is planted with excellently maintained old vines: mostly older than 50 years, the rest 20 to 35 years old. The vineyards are located on different soil types so that each wine gets its own character.
Edetaria strives to make characterful wines, in which grape and terroir are well expressed. Edetaria is the top cuvée of the domain. This exclusive and unique wine is only made in the best vintages.
