Edetària is an ambitious winery from the Terra Alta region, in Catalonia, 40 km south of Priorat. Driving force and owner is Joan Àngel Lliberia, whose father was a winemaker, and grandfather an oenologist.
Variety: 60% Garnacha Peluda, 30% Garnacha Fina and 10% Cariñena.
Appellation: Terra Alta DO
Vineyard: “Còdols” soil (an old river-bed), where Garnatxa peluda has been planted for more than 40 years ago
Vinification: Hand harvesting, the selection takes place already in the vineyard, again on the selection belt. Slow fermentation, then long aging in small and large wooden barrels. After fermentation, the Edetària Selecció Tinto is aged for several months in quarter barrels and large oak barrels.

My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep garnet red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of ripe red forest fruit, raspberries and dark chocolate with hints of spices, balsamico and some young tobacco.
On the palate dry, medium(++) bodied with medium(+) acidity and smooth tannins. Fleshy flavours of ripe red and dark fruits, liquorice, anise, light cedar, spices and undergrowth. The finish has a medium(+) length finish.
To pair with: Beef, pasta, veal and poultry.
Àngel Lliberia worked as a bioengineer with several domestic and foreign producers before building his own modern winery in his hometown, Gandesa, in 2003. An excellent foundation was in place. First of all, the climate of Terra Alta: sunny, warm, but thanks to the altitude of the vineyards - 500 m on average - the wines also possess sufficient freshness. In addition, much of the 30 hectares of vineyards are planted with excellently maintained old vines: mostly over 50 years old, the rest 20 to 35 years old. The vineyards are located on different soil types so that each wine gets its own character. Edetaria strives to make wines full of character in which grape and terroir are well expressed. This exclusive and unique wine is made only in the best millésimes.
