Duemani - Suisassi Syrah 2006 (93 TSW)
Two weeks ago I gave you a brief introduction to this boutique winery from Riparbella, Tuscany.
Elena Celli and Luca d'Attoma are a very successful pair of winegrowers. Both were born in Tuscany and have fulfilled their dream of owning their own winery by acquiring the beautiful Azienda Vitivinicola Duemani not far from the village of Riparbella in the Maremma. About ten kilometres from the sea and at an altitude of around 400 metres, the couple produce powerful, clearly structured and well-balanced wines.
The work in the vineyard and in the cellar was certified as organic and biodynamic because they considered the area unsuitable for conventional cultivation methods. After eight years of meticulous preparation of the soil, which was dominated by clay and stones and not particularly fertile, it was worth the effort. The red wines, which are pressed in the estate and are mostly pure and very limited in their edition, are kept in a modern style.
In the Duemani estate the three vineyards are arranged in the shape of an amphitheatre with a view of the sea. The approximately 7,000 vines of the Syrah variety grow in buscher education, i.e. without a support system consisting of wires, frames and poles.
About the wine:
Spontaneous fermentation in barriques and conical oak vats 1000 liters with manual punching down and attention to the control of the temperature. About 30% of the grapes ferments with the stalks. Stay in maceration for 20 days, then racked off and racked 20 months in French oak barriques and 300 lt tonneaux, 80% of new wood and 20% first pass. It does not undergo clarification or filtration.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep ruby red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of blueberries, dark plums and liquorice with hints of tobacco, smoke, new leather, spices and meaty tones.
On the palate dry, medium(++) bodied with medium acidity and velvet round tannins. Flavours of dark cherries, cacao, plums, dried berries and cloves in a beautifull balanced and intense aftertaste.
