Dr. Crusius - Weißburgunder "Kaffel" 2016 (89 TSW)
Wow. This is a very enjoyable Weißburgunder / Pinot Blanc!
This Weißburgunder "Kaffel" dry is Dr. Crusius top WBurgunder. Selected, highly ripe and healthy grapes from the best plots of the Traiser Rotenfels is the basis of this high-quality wine. The Weißburgunder "Kaffel" is expanded using stainless steel, large oak and young oak. Around 20% of the amount of wine matures in young oak wood for 6 months in first and second occupancy.
My notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color.
On the medium+ nose delicate aromas of apricot, apple and pear with well integrated hints of vanilla.
On the palate dry, medium-bodied with great balance, freshness and acidity. In the mouth soft, light creamy and lovely interplay between the acidity and light sweetness. Nice long final.
Pairs great with aromatic, light dishes such as scallops, pikeperch and sea bream harmonize excellently with this Nahe Weißburgunder.
The Dr. Crusius Wine Estate has a long history in Traisen (Nahe/Germany wineregion). Around 430 years ago theirancestors settled in this small village near the River Nahe and 200 years later the foundations were laid for the estate buildings, which still exist today. From the mid 20th century onwards the focus was exclusively on winegrowing.
Dr. Peter Crusius, the son of Hans Crusius, is the present owner and has planted the estate predominantly with Riesling (60%), some white Burgundy varieties (30%) and several varieties of red wine (Pinot noir précoce and Pinot noir 10%). Two thirds of the vineyard area is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE and VDP.ERSTE LAGE. Their two daughters Judith (marketing and export) and Rebecca (studying enology/ helping in the vineyards) are now bringing their own, fresh perspective to the family business.
