Donnafugata - Etna Rosso Contrada Montelaguardia DOC “Fragore” 2016 (91 TSW)
This year I visited the Sicily – Etna wine region. At that time this red one from the famous winery Donnafugata wasn’t ready yet. I am so exited to give this one a try!
Fragore is the new red wine by Donnafugata from the Montelaguardia area in Randazzo. This red wine is part of the collection of wine icons Mille e una Notte and Ben Ryè. With only 15.000 bottles, Donnafugata has produced a precious limited edition.
The name of the new wine, Fragore, means thunder in Italian: the volcanic thunder of Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano. The first vintage is from the 2016 harvest, with grapes from the Nerello Mascalese autochthonous grape variety from selected vineyards.
About the wine:
Fermentation in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for 10-12 days at a temperature of 25 °C. Aging in French oak (second and third passage barriques) for 14 months and then at least 10 months in bottle before release.
In the glass it shows a bright ruby red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of berries, forrest fruits with hints of sweet spices, mint, violets and balsamico notes.
On the palate medium++ bodied with medium acidity, fine tannins, nicely balanced and with nice complexity. Flavours are a recall of the nose with plums, berries and spices and a long and elegant finish.
Will pair great with legumes, mushrooms and tasty meats. Fragore perfectly matches turkey and barbecue ribs. Try it also with Asian food as Peking duck, beef and pork hot pots.
