Donatella Cinelli Colombini - Brunello di Montalcino 2010 (92 TSW)
About the winery:
You can call Donatella Cinelli Colombini a strong woman. The graduate historian (born in 1953), as a child of a wine-growing family in Montalcino, had an early love for wine-making. But it took until 1998 before she started making wine herself. She immediately set up two wine goods. Before that time she was chairman of the association for wine tourism for many years.
The first wine estate, Casato Prime Donne, is the first winery in Italy where a team of women only works. The wine estate is located between the hills of Montalcino where mainly vineyards with brunello vines are. It has 16 hectares of vineyards with Sangiovese grape vines and an ultramodern wine cellar.
The second wine estate, the Fattoria del Colle is a small 'Borgo', a mini-village around the main building from 1592. The estate includes an agrotourism firm with rooms, houses and villas, a restaurant, a wellness center, a cooking school, parks and swimming pools. In the wine cellar one makes the DOC Orcia wine and the chianti, the symbol of Tuscany.
The company has 17 hectares of vineyard and 6 hectares of olive trees.
How great the appreciation for Donatella Cinelli Colombini is shown by the fact that she was elected vice president of the Donne del Vino and president of the wine consortium Orcia. In 2014 she was named 'Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana'.
My tasting notes:
In the glass transparent dark ruby red color with garnet reflections.
On the medium+ nose beautiful aromas of dark cherries, blackberries and wet earth with hints of leather, tobacco, spices and menthol.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with supple tannins, medium+ acidity and good balance. Concentrated and velvet in the mouth with dark fruit, tobacco and liquorice. Very enjoyable BdM when you like the softer style.
