Dominio de Atauta - Dominio de Atauta 2016 (90 TSW)
You can find this lovely red one on Decantalo.com with a huge selection of Spaninsh wines. @decantalo
The wines from this 2016 vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
This red one from the Ribera del Duero region is a varietal wine of Tinto Fino with an ageing of 16 months in French oak barrels, 40% new and 60% used. This wine is made with the aim of showing the concentration, complexity and potential of the grapes and vineyards of this area.
My tasting notes:
In the glasss an intense purple color with high viscosity.
On the medium+ nose blackberries, black forest fruit, slightly jammed with hints of licorice, herbs, spices, smoke and vegetal hints.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied with medium acidity and ripe medium+ tannins. Round mouthfeel with warm flavours of blackberries, smoke, vanilla and spices. Nice medium+ finish. Still very young. Decanter before drinking or keep 5 years in cellar.
Pairing: Stews, Large game, Game birds, Roasted red meats.
Dominio de Atauta is a relatively new project. Since the beginning, its aim has been to express all the character of the Valley of Atauta, at 1,000 metres of altitude, in the province of Soria. Here, some of their wines are made from pre-phylloxera vineyards of Tinto Fino and some others from vines that are over 85 years old. The old age of the vines, the poor, shallow soils, and the careful work they carry out in the vineyards, all result in a very small production of a maximum of approximately 2,500 kg of grapes per hectare.
Due to the high altitude of the vineyard and constant winds, grapes are cleaned and dried. In addition, during the weeks of harvesting, the temperature fluctuations between day and night are around 25 ° C, which favours a good ripening of the grapes.
