Domaine du Coulet / Matthieu Barret - Cornas Billes Noires 2015 (89 TSW)
Serious Rh?ne wine from the Cornas region. I purchased this red at Idealwine. Check my stories.
They have a range of mature and recent vintages from well known and prestigious names and rising stars. From Chave Hermitage and Thierry Allemand Cornas to Yves Cuilleron, this is the most complete selection of northern and southern Rhône out there!
Cornas is a village and wine region in the northern Rhône valley. It produces only red wine exclusively from the Syrah grape variety. They are rich, powerful and dark, long lived, often with supple, ripe tannins.
Generally, the Cornas wines do not attract such high prices as their better-known rivals to the north, Hermitage and Côte Rôtie. The area is blessed with the same steep granite slopes and high sunshine hours as Hermitage. Aged on 3-8 year 600-litre oak casks 12 months, then concrete vat 12 months.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep purple color.
On the medium++ nose aromas of ripe berries, canned peas, dusty strawberries, olives and bacon with hints of earth and game.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied with medium+ tannins. Spicy and still young with great potential. Medium+ finish.
