Deltetto - Rocca delle Marasche Barbera d'Alba 2013 (90+ TSW)
The name of the vineyard, that enjoys a beautiful location in the village of Castellinaldo, comes from “marasca”, a variety of cherries once quite commonly grown throughout in Roero vineyards. The key in producing this truly intense and elegant wine is with a green harvest, a thinning out process during the growing season that allows the remaining grapes to over-mature on the plant. This wine is produced only in the very best vintages.
Vinfication: for about 8 days of extra ripening period in the vineyard, followed by maceration on skins for approximately 10 days at 28°C. Maturation for 18 months in French oak barriques followed by the ageing in bottle.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a intense deep ruby red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of ripe cherries, plums and truffles with hints of earth, cedar, licorice and spices.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium(+) acidity and medium(+) tannins. Round, warm mouthfeel with a recall of the nose. Nice complexity and a long final. Patient will be reward for this one.
Pairs well with main courses or simply like a meditation wine.
About the winery:
In 1953, Carlo Deltetto began producing high quality wines in Piemonte’s historic wine producing areas of Roero and Langhe. From the beginning of the his family’s winery in Canale, Carlo produced high quality wines in the tradition of the region.
Since completing his oenology studies in 1977, Carlo’s son Antonio - together with wife Graziella, their son Carlo, and their daughters Cristina and Claudia - has run the business, always faithful to his father’s vision. In over 21 hectares of vineyards, Deltetto produces great traditional red wine, white wine and Spumante.
