d'Arenberg - d'Arry's Original Shiraz Grenache 2015 (87 TSW)
Let’s support the #drinkaussiewine theme. Cheers Australia.
Known as 'Burgundy' until 1993, this wine was renamed d'Arry's Original in honour of third generation family member Francis d'Arenberg Osborn, universally known as d'Arry, to honour his lifelong services to the wine industry.
Small batches of grapes are gently crushed and then transferred to five tonne headed down open fermenters. These batches remain separate until final blending. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. The wine is then basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of new and used French oak barriques to complete fermentation. The barrel ferments are aged on lees, and there is no racking until final blending. This wine does not undertake fining or filtration prior to bottling.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep ruby red color.
On the medium+ nose red berries, cherry coke and blackberries with hints of barrique, chocolate, herbs and black pepper.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied with medium acidity and ripe medium tannins. High alcohol but well integrated with raspberries, plums and spices and herbs. Medium+ finish with nice spicyness.
To pair with beef, pasta, lamb and game.
D’Arenberg has a long history. In 1912, the first generation of Osborne purchased 78 hectares of Milton vineyards in an area nowadays called McLaren Vale. In 1959 use was made for the first time of the now characteristic label with the slanting red stripe, which subsequently remained the trademark of d'Arenberg. Just like the remarkable names of the wines, which each have their own anecdote.
D’Arenebrg is now in conversion towards Organic wine growing! March 2019 they launched their first wine labelled with full organic certification.
