Costers del Priorat - Clos Cypres Vinyes Velles (Old Vines) 2013 (93 TSW)
I like to share with you this beautiful red from Priorat wineregion. One of my faves because of its power and elegance.
In the village of Bellmunt, a west-facing samsó (carignan) vineyard at 300m to 375m was planted in 1934 called Finca Sant Martí. The oldest part of this vineyard next to the graveyard is named Clos Cypres for the ancient cypress trees which stand sentinel over the vineyard. The carignan wines of Bellmunt transmit the luminosity and warmth of the Mediterranean, soft and generous with developed tannins and a cool minerality from the trademark slate soils.
Vinification Spontaneous natural yeast fermentation takes place in amphora and 500-liter demi-muids, with subsequent 40-day maceration and spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged in the same vessels for 12 months.
Clos Cypres is the flagship of Costers del Priorat. As the name suggests, it is a single vineyard wine. The wine is made from the hundred year old Carignan vines. A beautiful, full-bodied red wine, which scored no less than 18.5 of the 20 points at Decanter.
I believe that the label has changed into a more modern style. So when you search fort his wine the label will be different.
My tasting notes:
This wine is powerful with a deep cherry red color.
On the nose medium+ aromas of licorice, roasted spices, tar, black currant and raspberries.
Complex but refined with minerals and vegetables that perfectly complement the aromas of wood aging. The taste is rich, mouth-filling and meaty that is full of ripe fruit and minerals. The polished tannins melt into the fruit in a soft lingering finish.
