My tasting notes:
After half an hour of decanting this young wine already jumped out of the glass.
In the glass an intense bright ruby red color with crimson reflections.
On the medium+ nose delicate aromas of blackberries, raspberries with hints of spices, light toast and chocolate.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied, soft in the mouth with great balance and structure. It’s acidity is still medium+ and the tannins are soft. Very enjoyable already but with potential for 93-94 points in a few years.
About the winery:
The second wine of the Château Figeac cru classé. In 2002, the Manoncourt family bought a 1.5-hectare plot from Axa Millésimes which was part of the historic Figeac vineyard in the 19th century. From 2012, Petit Figeac officially became Château Figeac's second wine. The grapes are manual harvested and vinified in oak barrels (20% new) for 16 months. This wine is also subject to selection, the remaining juices being handed over to the wine traders.
Of all Saint Emilion's wines, Château Figeac is considered to be the one most in the Médoc style. The reason is that, unlike most of the appellation's other Premier Grand Crus Classés, which are situated on clay-limestone soil, Château Figeac benefits from gravelly soil, similar to that in the Médoc. This geological configuration, so unusual for Saint Emilion, gives Figeac an exceptional elegance. Another distinction is that while most of the appellation is planted with Merlot as the dominant variety, Figeac has mainly Cabernet (35% Cabernet Franc and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon).
