The vineyards of Château Barbebelle are located on land that was once cultivated by the Romans, around an original château from the 16th century.
16 km north of Aix-en-Provence, on the road to the Luberon, the vineyard entirely in the Coteaux d'Aix en Provence appellation occupies 45 hectares in a single estate of 300 hectares. It is therefore at the heart of a protected flora and fauna, between the cypresses, the umbrella pines and the holm oaks, that the vines of the Château draw all their riches to give quality wines. The grape varieties of the appellation (Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cinsault, Vermentino, Sauvignon…) settle on a homogeneous territory of clay-limestone hillsides on a rugged terrain, suitable for viticulture, very representative of Provence.
The rugged terrain provides good ventilation and the average altitude of the vineyard - 370 meters - gives cool nights, even in the height of summer. Finally, the Mistral de Provence naturally cleanses the grapes. This beautiful location, 16 kilometers north of Aix en Provence, has been home to the Herbeau family for four generations.
Father Brice takes care of the wines and his daughter Madeleine is responsible for business operations and sales. The younger generation also came up with the label on this bottle. Father was not so enthusiastic. The public eventually did.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a very bright salmon color.
On the medium nose aromas of strawberries, forest fruit and raspberries with hints of peach and white blossom.
On the palate dry, medium-bodied with a subtle lime acidity and freshness. Light sweet and sour with grapefruit hints, red berry fruits and a splash of green apple. Medium finish. Perfect fort he warm summer evenings.
