Castello Vicchiomaggio - La Prima Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2013 (90 TSW)
Mainly Sangiovese and 10% Merlot.
Castello Vicchiomaggio is located near the town of Greve in Chianti, in the heart of the breathtaking Chianti area, just 18 km from Florence and 38 km from Siena. The winery is a well-known producer of internationally renowned wines.
Wine has always been produced at the Castle and its owners, John and Paola Matta, dedicate their lives to preserving this centuries-old tradition.
The estate covers 140 hectares, of which 34 are vineyards, 10 are olive trees and the rest is park.
Among the cultivated varieties: the most prominent vine is Sangiovese, which is the fundamental grape for Chianti Classico, but there are also other indigenous grapes such as Canaiolo and Colorino, as well as two international varieties which are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
About this wine:
La Prima, a 2.2Ha plot of Sangiovese, with a planting density of 5000 vines/Ha. on heavy clay (30%) at an altitude of 250 mt. Single Guyot pruning, very low yields of about 30Hl/Ha.
Small 50Hl. stainless fermentation vats ensure maximum skin/juice contact for a period of about 15 days. Maturation for 18 months in new 225 lt. French barriques followed by about 8 months in bottle before release.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright ruby red color with light brick red edges.
On the medium+ nose aromas of dark cherries, red berries and cassis with hints of eucalyptus, light toasted cedar, vanilla and olives.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with elegant tannins and balanced flavours. Very round and elegant in the mouth with berries, cassis, cherries and hints of chocolate and liquorice. Good length.
Perfect with this Lasagne but also with pizza, beef, veal and poultry.
