Castello Vicchiomaggio - Amphiarao Toscana Rosso IGT 2018 (91 TSW)
The new Amphiarao 2018 from Castello Vicchiomaggi is an IGT Tuscan red, fermented in stainless steel (with 8 days of skin macceration) and then aged exclusively in 500 litre amphorae of Impruneta terracotta and contained in an attractive Bordeaux impériale bottle. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese comes from the Maremma estate of Rispescia and is the first vintage of this wine.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep and intense ruby red color.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of raspberries, blackberries and cherry compote with hints of black pepper, balsamico, rosemary and cloves.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with good acidity and fresnhess. Fruit forward with ripe fruit like cherries and raspberries, round in the mouth and a long lingering finish.
About the winery in Greve / Chianti
After studying at the School of Viticulture and Enology in Alba (Piedmont, Italy), for three years while also being active in the trade of wines in the UK, John Matta (son of Frederio) began his career at Castello Vicchiomaggio. As an expert on the importance of soil characteristics, low yields and sustainable traditional agriculture, John initiated an extremely prudent, and highly innovative step at the time, replanting the vines in line with his philosophy. Sangiovese is predominant of course, along with Cabernet and Merlot. In the process of wine production, John prefers wines that use oak sparingly and is an avid supporter of traditional oak barrels. His style makes the production elegant characterised by excellent longevity.
In 2010 the two older daughters, Federica and Delfina, became part of the family business devoted to the development of splendid accommodation facilities and restaurant.
