Castello Romitorio - Il IGT Toro Toscana 2015
Castello Romitorio - Il IGT Toro Toscana 2015 (89 tsomw points)
Excellent blend of Syrah and Petite Verdot in equal parts. This red one aged for approximately 12 months in oak and is unfiltered.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark ruby red color.
On the nose blackberries and dark cherries with well integrated hints of dried herbs, chocolate and spices.
On the palate medium/full-bodied with enough acidity and freshness showing flavours of red berries, cinamon and spices. The tannins are still grippy but not disturbing. The finish is long, warm and with some nice spicyness. This will even get better within some years.
About the winery:
Sandro Chia is originally a conceptual painter and sculptor from Florence. In 1984 he bought Castello Romitorio. Sandro started a large-scale restoration of the castle, the surrounding vineyards and the more than 1000-year-old wine cellar. As a winemaker, he contracted the oenologist Franco Martini. We are now 34 years further and the domain is owned by the son of Sandro: Filippo Chia. And the wines are made by the son of Franco: Stefano Martini. The labels of all wines of the domain are still designed by the old master himself: Sandro Chia.
After thirty years of hard work in the area, Castello Romitorio is now an internationally recognized winery specializing in Sangiovese and Brunello di Montalcino. The Chia family is committed to tradition and the pursuit of excellence, through classic style and innovation. The most demanding challenge is measuring up to an extraordinary area, and continuing to offer consistently high quality wines that express their origin.
