Castello di Bolgheri - Bolgheri Superiore 2013
Castello di Bolgheri – Bolgheri Superiore 2013 (90 TSW)
Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep ruby red color with violet reflections.
On the medium+ nose aromas of dark fruit like plums, blackberries and cherries with hints of vanilla, tobacco, licorice and black pepper.
On the palate dry, full-bodied and still youthful with medium+ tannins and acidity. A good decanter opens this wine nicely with a recall of the nose with a long and persistent finish.
Foodpairing: beef, game and matured cheese.
The Bolgheri Castle is owned by Countess Franca Spalletti Trivelli. The domain covers 130 ha, of which 50 ha vineyard. In 1997 they began planting high-quality French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This in accordance with the provisions of the DOC Bolgheri. And that is remarkable, because in Tuscany traditionally Sangiovese has been planted.
Because her grandmother used to market wine under the name Castello di Bolgheri, the Countess could continue to use the origin name DOC Bolgheri as owner of the castle. And that is exceptional, because normally the name of the appellation in Italy can not appear in the name of the domain.
