Castellari Bergaglio - Rolona Gavi di Gavi 2019 (88 TSW)
Like the red wines of the region, the white Gavi di Gavi is also a wine that can age remarkably. He owes this character to a combination of a powerful character with a lively acidity, which gives the wines a remarkable shelf life. The grape at the base of the wine is Cortese, one of the special local grapes from Piemonte. A unique grape variety, which we do not find anywhere else.
The key belief in the philosophy of Castellari Bergaglio is passion and respect for the Cortese di Gavi grape and its growing area.
This Gavi is from the hillside vineyards in the Gavi region. The grapes are transferred to the cellar immediately and undergo soft pressing to extract the very best from the fruit. Fermentation takes place slowly at a controlled temperature (18-20°C, to maintain the typically rich aromas of the Cortese di Gavi varietal) and lasts for up to 20 days. The wine is bottled in february or March to allow a minimal ageing, period in bottles before the wine is sold, and to make sure it reaches a certain level of maturity and balance.
The wine is very pleasant the spring after the harvest but is at its most enjoyable after a few months in the bottles. It can be kept in bottles for several years without suffering in quality.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus yellow color.
On the medium nose aromas of ripe apple, pear and peach with hints of white flowers, lime and banana.
On the palate dry, medium- bodied with crispy acidity and round in the mouth. Flavours are a recall of the nose with a nice salinety in the medium length finish.
