Casal Santa Maria - 3000 Rosas Rosé 2020 (88/89 TSW)
A very nice rosé blend from the most western vineyards of Europe. #doccolares
The wife of Baron Bruemmer died in 1994 in Portugal. To honor her, he has planted 3000 beautiful roses at Casal Sta Maria in Colares, the only region in Portugal where 'Phylloxera', the grape aphid has never been. The sandy soils of Colares formed a bulwark against phylloxera invasion, and the region's vines were traditionally planted in trenches to protect them from the salty sea breezes. This means that this rosé is made from the original Portuguese vines. The vineyards of Casal Sta Maria overlook the Atlantic Ocean!
The Touriga Nacional, Syrah and Pinot Noir grapes are harvested by hand The bunches are carefully transported to the cold room, avoiding oxidation and colour extraction. In the cellar, selection on the sorting table, slight crushing of the grapes by centrifugal method, followed by cold pressing. The juice decants for about 48 hours in stainless steel vats, after which fermentation begins, half in used and new French oak barrels of 225L and 500L and the other half in stainless steel vats. Finally, the wine ages in fine lees for about 6 months with bâtonnage.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright salmon pink color.
On the medium nose aromas of peach, apricot and cherries with hints of light cedar and flowers.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with medium acidity and a nice freshness. Light creamy and round in the mouth with a fine texture. Flavours are a recall oth nose with a nice salinity in the medium length aftertaste.
To pair with various salads such as salad Niçoise or gorgonzola salad with spinach and walnuts, grilled sardines with tomato, onion and basil, or delicious with fruits du mer.
