Cantine Ravazzi - Unguercio Toscana Rosso 2012
Pairing Suggestions
Cantine Ravazzi - Unguercio Toscana Rosso 2012 (88 TSW)
Tuscan blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot.
The Ravazzi winery is located in the famous Tuscany region in the picturesque town of San Casciano dei Bagni. This family winery has several vineyards (15 hectares) in the southern part of Tuscany as well as several wine cellars in the Chianti denomination. This allows Ravazzi to make wines under the Chianti label as well as some special cuvées that fall outside the DOC qualification. Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Merlot are the main red grape varieties. For white Alberto Ravazzi makes use of Vermentino, Malvasia and Trebbiano, among others.
This idiosyncratic blend of Sangiovese and Merlot falls outside the Chianti appellations so it becomes Toscana Rosso.
Fermentation in wood tanks at controlled temperature with selected yeats. Maceration post fermentation of 10/15
days. Aging for 36 months in oak barrels. Then 2 months of bottle aging.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark ruby red color.
On the medium nose aromas of dark cherries, plums and blueberries with hints of cedar, leather, marzipan, black pepper and vanilla.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium acidity and medium soft tannins. Flavours are a recall of the nose with good balance and a medium+ finish with light bitter hints.
To pair with game, distinctive cheeses, roasted or grilled meat and even pasta Bolognese.
