Canalicchio di Sopra - Brunello di Montalcino 2013 (92 TSW)
A few weeks ago we had dinner in one of our favorite Italian restaurants in Maastricht @vinoandfriends_maastricht
Beside the good food we also ordered this 100% Sangiovese from Montalcine wine region.
In 1962 Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded by Primo Pacenti. The domain is located in the northern part of the municipality of Montalcino. Canalicchio owns 60 ha of land, of which 15 ha is planted with vineyards and 2 ha with olives. For 3 generations, wine has been produced with a lot of passion and skills, using the most new technologies with respect for old traditions and nature.
The vines are planted in two different zones in Montalcino, namely: Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. The differences in location and soil result in different types of Sangiovese, which are carefully fused together in the cellars to create a great result.
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 350 meters. The vines are planted on a soil of clay and marl with layers of lime here and there.
Peel soaking for 15-20 days. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats under controlled temperatures. The wine rests for another 36 months in 25 hl Slavonian oak barrels, after which the wine is aged for another year in the bottle.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a light transparent ruby red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of red berries, red sour cherries and plums with hints of young leather, balsamico, spices and tobacco.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium acidity and medium fine grained tannins. Concentrated flavours of liquorice, coffee, earth and red and dark fruits with a dark pepper medium+ finish. Top!
This Brunello goes well with red meat and game, but also with matured cheeses.
