Canalicchio di Sopra - Brunello di Montalcino 2010 (93+ TSW)
Happy Global Drink Wine Day!
Another great wine in the winter scenery. This weekend temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius will arive in the South of the Netherlands so I think this will be my last snowy capture.
Some months ago I ordered a box of the Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia 2015 at the Dutch importer @goessensprofessionalsinwine which is a single-vineyard expression from the Canalicchio area, one of the subzones on the northeast side of Montalcino. The site is a little over two hectares, and it has dense, mineral-rich clay soils that add more power and a heavier center of gravity. The vines were planted in 1990.
Back to this Brunello.
The vines are planted in two different zones in Montalcino, namely: Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli. The differences in location and soil result in different types of Sangiovese, which are carefully fused together in the cellars to create a great result.
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 350 meters. The vines are planted on a soil of clay and marl with layers of lime here and there.
Vinifications in steel tanks with fermentation temperature control, daily soft pumping over. Maceration on the skins for 25 days. 36 months in slavonian Oak casks (2500 and 5000 Liters)
My tasting notes:
I opened the bottle a couple of hours before drinking.
In the glass a deep ruby red color - light transparent.
On the medium(+) nose delicate aromas of dark plums, blackberries and dark cherries with hints of leather, spices, cigarbox, cedar and liquorice.
On the palate dry, medium(++) bodied with medium acidity and ripe medium tannis. Nicely balanced with great concentration and elegance and a medium(+) length spicy finish. Very enjoyable.
