Can Sumoi (Raventós i Blanc) - Perfum 2017 (87 TSW)
Formerly produced by the Raventós i Blanc winery, the white wine Perfum is now crafted by Can Sumoi, a new, personal project of winemaker Pepe Raventós which aims to produce terroir-oriented, natural wines in a high-altitude environment.
A 400-hectare farm located at 600 metres of altitude. It is planted with 20 hectares of vineyard, with native varieties Parellada, Sumoll and Xarello. This last one is in the process of being recovered. The farm also has 3 country houses from the 18th century and an old winery.
The 2017 blend of this Spanish white wine is made principally from Muscat (Moscatel de Grano Menudo), complemented with Parellada & Macabeo. The grapes were harvested by hand separating plots and varieties. The Parellada grapes were the last ones, and they were harvested in late September.
Destemmed and gently crushed, they were fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 16ºC. After 17 days, Can Sumoi Perfum 2017 spontaneously underwent malolactic fermentation. Finally, this organic white wine was not filtered or stabilized before being bottled.
Here, Pepe Raventós, oenologist and winemaker, wishes to make natural wines with origin, extracting the true reflection of the land where they are born, and its landscapes. To achieve this, he cultivates the entire farm biodynamically. He makes his wines recovering rural traditions, and without adding any kind of oenological additive.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright straw yellow color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of (muscat grape) roses, citrus and peach with hints of grapefruit and brioche.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with light butter notes and nice medium acidity fort he right freshness. Very aromatic wine with trpoical fruit, apple and honey and a medium+ aftertaste.
Great to pair with foie gras, fish, smoked dishes, aperitif, salads and raw seafood.
