Bodegas Mas Alta - Els Pics 2014 (89 TSW)
Entry level wine is not really the right term for this blend of 60% Garnacha, 35% Carignan and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. But ok!! You get a lot of wine for only 20 euro.
Bodegas Mas Alta is a relatively young wine company and is located in the old town of Vilela Alta, located in one of Spain's most beautiful wine-growing areas: Priorat. This wine region in Catalonia, together with Rioja, has the highest possible qualification, DOC status. Owned by Belgian owners (Michel Vanhoutte), this company has one motto: “respect for nature and everything related to it, and linked to it the pursuit of the highest possible quality”. Together with his partners, he started building the domain in 1999, with the support of Michel Tardieu and Philippe Cambie, 2 French oenologists.
Aging for about 10 months. 50% in concrete tanks and 50% in French oak barrels (between 2 and 5 years old)
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep dark ruby red color with purple edges.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of black currants, plums and blackberries wuth hints of espresso, cedar, vanilla, chocolate, earth and leather.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium acidity and soft tannins. Flavours of black fruit, sweet cedar, pepper, liquorice, tobacco and chocolate with a wonderful round and medium(+) length finish.
This wine goes perfectly with game stews, game dishes & cheese dishes
