Bodegas Langa - Frenesi Organic Wine 2017 (87 TSW)
Just before leaving we spotted this great label and had to try this red one from DO Calatayud. It’s a interesting blend of of Merlot, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. A wine with a very good PQR.
The grapes come from 30-year-old vines at an altitude of 800 to 900 meters with a substrate of slate and rock. Biodynamic viticulture. Low yield of only 3 to 4,000 kg per hectare. Manual harvest with alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel barrel with temperature control at 25 ° C and use of native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. Aging for 4 to 6 months in American, European and French oak barrels. Afterwards a bottle ripening of more than 6 months.
My tasting notes:
This blend has a deep dark red color with purple reflections.
On the medium+ nose aromas of dark cherries, prunes and blackberries with hints of vanilla, spices and herbs.
On the palate dry, medium bodied with a warm and round mouthfeel. Medium+ acidity and medium tannins. Easy drinking red with ripe red fruit, spices, coffee and vanilla.
The first steps in this success story were taken by Don Mariano Langa Gallego who started a small wine estate in the small village of Morata de Jiloca in 1867. Today Bodegas Langa is the market leader and metronome in Aragon's cava production. This is the only family-run wine estate in the DO Calatayud with history and tradition. The Langa family owns more than 70 hectares of vineyards spread over two domains that can benefit from completely different conditions, resulting in a variety of top class aromas.
The vineyards lie between the mountain range of the Sierra Armantes and the Ribota river at an altitude of 600 to 900 meters. The microclimate present here is characterized by extremely little rainfall. The soil consists of clay and rock and is a perfect terroir for viticulture.
