Arzuaga - Amaya Arzuaga Colección 2014 (90 TSW)
Wonderful memories of my visit to this winery in the Ribera del Duero region.
Lovely blend of 95% Tempranillo and a splash of Albillo (Real) - This white variety is sometimes added to the red wines of the Ribera del Duero for added aromatics.
This wine is born from the collaboration between a father and his daughter. Don Florentino Arzuaga, owner of Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro, brings a wealth of experience to the winemaking process, while his daughter, prominent fashion designer Amaya Arzuaga, gives a creative and stylistic touch to the bottle itself.
Amaya Arzuaga Colección is a single varietal Tinto Fino from old vines farmed in two separate estates: the first, with clayey soil containing sand and pebbles; and the second with limestone, providing deep minerality to the wine.
The harvest takes place manually with 15-kg boxes. The grapes pass through a selection process before being barrelled, and are mashed daily before fermentation, which lasts 14 days and includes batonage. Amaya Arzuaga Colección is aged for approximately 20 months in French barrels of different origins, with prolonged and deep drying and toasting at low temperatures.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep ruby red color.
On the nose delicate aromas of ripe black cherries, plums and blackberries with hints of spices, barrique and floral hints.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied, with medium+ acidity and ripe medium tannins. Flavours are a recall of the nose. Smooth and round in the mouth with nice elegance. Would like to retaste in 5 years.
