Bodegas Alto Moncayo - Alto Moncayo 2016

Bodegas Alto Moncayo - Alto Moncayo 2016 (92+ TSW)
‘Alto Moncayo’ is the flagship of the winery. It is also another single-grape variety of Garnacha, from vines between 40 and 70 years old, aged in new barrels for 20 months.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a deep dark ruby red color with purple reflections.
On the medium(+) nose aromas of black cherries, blackberries and vanilla with hints of smoke, herbs, balsamico, cedar and roasted meat.
On the palate dry, full-bodied with round mouthfeel. Medium acidity and ripe tannins with complex layers.
Flavours are a recall of the nose with extra flavours like cigarbox, chocolate and raisins. High in alcohol but not disturbing. Only a light sweetness in the beginning but kept together with the acidity. Long lingering finish.
Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a winery located in the area covered by the Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen. It was founded in 2002 with the aim of turning it into a world reference for Garnacha wines of the highest quality, prepared from native vine clones.
The garnacha grape is one of the varieties that best expresses its terroir. Thus, the Garnacha of Alto Moncayo is different from the rest of the Campo de Borja (DO) area.
This is due to the very strict selection made from the vineyards, the type of soil in which they are grown, the microclimate and the age of the vines. As these vines are very old, the strains are very well-balanced, with a very deep root system.
All of these factors, together with the location of the vineyards, between 500m and 800m in height, where the maturity is very slow, leads to wines of great fruitiness and minerality. In the mouth they are rich and fulsome, with pleasant, mature tannins and highly aromatic persistence.
