Bodega San Gregorio - Las Martas - Cervera de la Cañada 2014 (88 tsomw points)
The Denominación de Origen Calatayud is located more than 95 km southwest of Saragossa. In the last 2 decades this DO has built up an exemplary career and radiates this star as clearly as never before.
This well-deserved fame owes the region to the beautiful old vineyards with Garnacha and to wineries such as Bodega San Gregorio. This winery has broken a lance for the region with lovingly produced wines from grapes from small high-lying plots. In an impressive way it shows how well the Garnacha thrives in the often forgotten Calatayud.
The terroir is characterized by loam and lime. After the careful manual harvest, the grapes were slightly crushed and fermented for 7 days at 30° C. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine ripened 12 months in stainless steel tanks and 12 months in the bottle for the finishing touch.
My tasting notes.
In the glass a deep purple color with a nice red edge in the glass.
On the nose aromas of black fruit, dark red cherries, plum, coffee and a little hint of graphite
On the palate dry, well balanced with nice acidity and tannins. Flavours of dark ripe red fruit, chocolate and spices and vanilla. Nice long finish. Well made and good value.
