Antonella Corda - Ziru Isola dei Nuraghi 2018 (89 TSW)
This week I had a virtual tasting with the winemaker Antonella Corda and we tasted their four wines. The Vermentino di Sardegna, Nuragus van Cagliari, Cannonau di Sardegna and this Ziru Isola dei Nuraghi.
In the case of the Cantina di Antonella Corda - a long winemaking tradition handed down from generation to generation - passion is the engine of everything: a transport transmitted from mother to daughter and a great dedication to the land inherited from the father.
Taking over the reins of the company nine years ago, Antonella transformed the past into a great project, giving life to a boutique winery capable of producing fine wines that mirror the Serdiana terroir.
The new born of the island's maison is called Ziru, an archaic Sardinian word indicating the ceramic jars that were used by farmers to store oil as well as wine; appellation of a Vermentino (Igt, Isola dei Nuraghi) fruit of the 2017 harvest: manual harvest, aged in terracotta amphorae and produced in very limited quantities (only 1500 bottles).
The soil is a mixture of sand, loam, clay and pebbles.
One month maceration on the skins followed by maturation in clay amphorae for 12-18 months. Bottled unfiltered.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright golden yellow color.
On the medium nose aromas of limestone, peach, pear and flowers with hints of pineapple, menthol and herbs.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium acidity and nice freshness. Complex flavours with a round mouthfeel. Ends with a light salty green tea finish. Very nice.
An excellent accompaniment to fish dishes but also meat such as lamb with lemon.
