Abbazia di Novacella - Praepositus Sauvignon 2015 (88 tsomw points)
This winery from Alto Adige region was founded 850 years ago by monks and is one of the oldest wine companies in the world.
The Abbazia di Novacella (or Kloster Neustift) is located north of Bressanone (Brixen) in Alto Adige (Südtirol). The Augustinian Canons started making wine here 850 years ago in the Isarco (Eisack) valley, making it one of the oldest wine companies in the world. There is another special feature: the vineyards surrounding the monastery are the most northerly in the whole of Italy. The height (600-900 meters), the fresh climate and the mineral soil are ideal for optimal development of aromas for the typical white wines of Valle Isarco, such as Sylvaner, Müller Thurgau, Riesling, Veltliner and especially Kerner. It is too high and too cold for making red wines, which means that the company also owns vineyards and cellars near and to the south of Bolzano, especially for the Lagrein and Pinot Nero. Meanwhile, the monks leave the winemaking to specialists and not without result: wine maker Celestino Lucin was chosen in 2009 by Gambero Rosso as the best in Italy. (content pallaswines)
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright golden yellow color with silver reflections.
On the nose intense aromas of smoky stone fruits, grapefruit with hints of herbs, pepper and light bitter citrus.
On the palate medium-bodied and fresh with a bit low acidity (for me) showing green apple, peach, herbs and a long mineral finish.
