Pfitscher – Sauvignon Blanc Mathias 2016 (90 TSW)
Author: Goswijn Simons.
Named after the founder of the Pfitscher winery, Mathias is the burgundy idol of a Grand Cru: a terroir wine. A mineral, lively soil and a perfect microclimate get together with the precise handwork in the vineyards of Alto Adige.
The single vineyard “Katherinerfelder” in Fiè allo sciliar on 900m a.s.l. is offering the optimal conditions. Only in the coming years, there are going to be around 1.500 to maximum 2.000 bottles produced of this premium wine.
Their aspiration was the creation of a big wine, who is impressing with his deepness, minerality and elegance like other top wines of the world. The Sauvignon Blanc “Mathias” 2016 is offered with an extremely limited availability of just 1.850 bottles.
Vinification:
Before being pressed, a maceration takes place for six hours. 70% of the must ferments in small oak barrels and 30% in stainless steel barrels. Maturation in oak (barrique and tonneau) and steel barrel on the fine lees for sixteen months, followed by a few months in the bottle.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright yellow color with green reflections.
On the medium+ nose aromas of paprika, tomatoleaf and tropical fruits (mango, passion fruits) and peach with hints of herbs and vanilla.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with round mouthfeel, concentrated with enough freshness. Nicely balanced with recall of he nose, barrique hints and persistent aftertaste. Still very young and with great potential.
