Vegalfaro - Pago de Los Balagueses Garnacha Tintorera – Merlot 2014 (87 TSW)
Nice soft wine. Little too much ripe fruit for me but well made red.
The Vegalfaro Winery is located within the province of Valencia, in the region of La Plana de Requena-Utiel. Syrah and Garnacha Tintorera are the predominant varieties here, in addition to a small plot of land with Merlot and Chardonnay.
About the wine:
After the selective harvest by hand, the grapes are de-stemmed, followed by the temperature-controlled mash fermentation. For another two months, the wine matures on the lees, for a total of 10 months in French oak barrels.
Blend of 65% Garnacha Tintorera and 35% Merlot.
Tasting notes:
In the glass an intense dark cherry red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of dark ripe cherries and dark berries with hints of herbs, flowers and light vanilla.
On the palate medium+ bodied, concentrated with medium acidity and a light sweetness showing flavours of ripe dark fruit and chocolate. The tannins are soft with a medium+ liquorice aftertaste.
Recommended food pairing: Cochinillo asado, deep red game and matured beef, confit of red peppers and tomatoes, risotto with mushrooms and eggplants.
