Andrian – Pinot bianco Finado 2017 (88 TSW)
Cantina Andrian was the first cooperative of Alto Adige, founded in 1893. Since then, the members have always strived to make high-quality wines, of course with the ups and downs that go with them, for example due to war and other problems. But the farmers have always managed to maintain a high level of quality. However, they had to come to the conclusion that their co-operative was actually too small-scale to really continue independently. She decided to join forces in 2008 with Cantina Terlan , the cooperative of the neighboring village. However, they have managed to preserve their own identity in the form of their own wines and their own bottles.
The vineyards are located on the slopes along the Adige, west of Bolzano, on the spot where a separate wine may also be made under the name 'Terlaner'. The vineyards are just below the mountains, with a view of the mighty Mendel and the emblematic Gantkofel.
The Pinot blanc is a grape that we find in many Northern, temperate wine regions. Italy does not have so many suitable, cool places for this grape. The Alto Adige vineyards are one of the few places where the pinot blanc can thrive. The vineyards for this grape are therefore in a cool place, between 260 and 380 meters. The substrate consists of clay mixed with dolomite. The grapes are picked with a good acidity, for a nice freshness. The fermentation takes place at a low temperature on stainless steel. Afterwards, the wine remains on the yeast cells for six months, giving it a delicious rich and round character.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a bright citrus color with greenish rim.
On the medium nose aromad of green apple, pear and citrus with hints of flowers and melon.
On the palate dry, medium-bodied with nice freshness and balance. Ends with a light bitter finish and citrus hints.
