Castello di Bolgheri - Varvàra 2014 (89 TSW points)
Happy New Year my winefriends. Let's rock 2019 with good wines and reviews but also more winery visits and interviews. Soon more!
The wine is named after Baroness Varvàra Wrangel, grandmother of the current owner Gravin Franca Spalletti Trivelli. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and a small part of Petit Verdot that has been aging for 10 months.
The vineyards are located just outside the village of Bolgheri, with a view of the Mediterranean Sea. The vines are arranged in rows, perpendicular to the sea. In the evening, the grapes get the extra warm evening sun, but also the fresh breeze from the sea.
In the glass a dark ruby red color.
On the medium+ nose aromas black berries, ripe cherries with hints of tobacco, forest floor and mushrooms.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with concentrated flavours, medium acidity and silky mouthfeel with flavours of black currants, raspberries, spices, herbs and tobacco. The tannins are well integrated and it has a long and soft finish.
