Mas Doix – Les Crestes Priorat 2014 (88 tsomw points)
The entry level Priorat from this great producer really delivers.
Mas Doix 'Les Crestes' Priorat 2016 consists of 80% garnacha, 10% cariñena and 10% syrah. The vines of the grape varieties are located at a height between 350 and 500 meters above sea level and consist of the famous slate terroir (Llicorella). The yield is 1,000 grams per vine. The garnacha vines are 20 years old, cariñena and syrah are still relatively young.
After the manual harvest, the grapes on the sorting table were rigorously selected and subsequently de-stoned. The temperature controlled fermentation took place separately for each species. The aging in French oak barrels (second occupation) lasted eight months, after which the wine was finally bottled unfiltered.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark ruby red color.
On the rich nose aromas of cherries, blueberries and hints of herbs, tobacco, cedar and flowers.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with medium+ acidity and easy tannins. Flavours of ripe cherries, tart red fruit and some black pepper. A very good wine which can age some more years.
Excellent combination with red meat, game, boeuf bourguignon, paté, jamón and hard cheeses
