Muri-Gries Lagrein Riserva 2003 (90 tsomw points)
At Muri Gries we had a great vertical tasting of their Lagrein Riserva.
We tasted the 2015, 2011 and 2003 which you can see on the picture. During this tasting we tasted how well Lagrein can age!
MuriI-Gries is more than a winery. Within its historical walls, the daily round is guided by monastery life in combination with work in a busy cellar and the work on its own 35-hectare wine estate with vineyards in the best locations in and around Bolzano. History brought all this together more than a century ago. The routines in the vineyard and the cellar have always gone hand in hand.
More than any other wine, Lagrein is synonymous with South Tyrol. And the history of Muri-Gries is inseparable from this native variety. Thanks to the perfect terroir with the reliable interaction of soil and climate and our enthusiasm for autochthonous excellence, the Lagrein from their best monastery sites has become the hallmark of Muri-Gries – following twenty years of research in the vineyard and cellar. The result is a wine with finesse and an identity of its own, well balanced and yet with a distinctive character combining a typical down-to-earth taste with rustic elegance.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a opaque black color with some sediment.
On the nose intense aromas of dark cherries, blackberries and mulberries with well integrated aromas of cedar, earthy hints and light vanilla.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied with still great refreshing acidity and still fine grainied tannins. A recall of the nose on the palate with a long and juicy aftertaste.
