Weingut Von Winning – Paradiesgarten Riesling 2016 (89 tsomw points)
Since Von Winning Winery was founded in 1849, unique wines reflecting their vineyards in Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim, and Forst have been produced in their historic cellar. In 1907, Leopold von Winning, son-in-law of Dr. Andreas Deinhard, dedicated his life to creating top quality wines with respect to the outstanding vineyards in which he was allowed to work. He raised the quality of the wines to a new level and became founding member of VDP, an association of German premium wineries.
The total annual production amounts to 250.000 to 300.000 bottles. The Riesling is by far the most important grape of the domain, with a planted area of ??more than 80% of the total of 38 hectares of vineyards.
The spacious planting of riesling has everything to do with the special class of the terroir of the domain. No less than 10 hectares of the winery are classified as 'Großes Gewächs', the German counterpart of the French concept Grand Cru. In the vineyard everything is being done to not disturb the ecosystem of the vineyards, but to support them. The grapes are deeply rooted, so that they perfectly express the special character of the terroir in the wines.
In the cellar the principle is used of minimizing manipulation of the wine. For the top wines they work with minimal filtering, a natural and spontaneous fermentation and the omission of means to clear the wine. This ensures wines with an authentic character, in an elegant style, which stand out from the crowd.
My tasting notes
In the glass a bright yellow color.
On the nose delicate aromas of citrus, peach, apricot and goosberries and hints of ripe apples, banana and a mineralic touch.
On the palate dry, medium-bodied with lovely flavours of melon, peach, white blossom and lychees. Very nice and crisp Riesling with a great minerality with medium finish.
