Luis Canas – Reserva Seleccion de la Familia 2011 (89 tsomw points)
The Cañas family has been active in grape growing and wine production for more than 2 centuries. Making wine is in their blood! This particular Rioja Reserva belongs to the "Seleccion de la Familia" - it is of the best wines of the family. It is made from 85% tempranillo and 15% other Spanish grapes from average 45 year old vines. The perfect location in relation to the sun and the poor soil, ensure low production and very high quality.
The family takes care of a double selection after the careful picking, so that only the very best grapes are used. The wine ripens for 20 months in American and French oak barrels.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark ruby red color.
On the nose this Rioja shows delicate aromas of dark red fruits like blackberries and dark cherries with well integrated barrique and hints of vanilla, chocolate and laurel.
On the palate dry, full-bodied and well balanced. Great stewy red fruits like cherries and raspberries with toasted wood and liquorice and velvet tannins. Greath length with coffee and choclate spiciness.
