Canalicchio di Sopra – Rosso di Montalcino 2016 (88 TSW)
100% Sangiovese - Production of approximately 18.500
Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti. The domain is located in the northern part of the municipality of Montalcino. Canalicchio owns 60 hectares of land, 15 hectares of which are planted with vineyards and 2 hectares with olives. Wine has been produced with great passion and skill for 3 generations and the most new technologies are used with respect for old traditions and nature. The vines are planted in two different zones in Montalcino, namely: Canalicchio di Sopra and Le Gode di Montosoli . The differences in location and soil cause different types of Sangiovese, which are carefully fused together in the cellars to a beautiful result.
Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vessels under controlled temperatures and daily pumping. Maceration on the skin for 15-20 days, then 12 months maturation in barrels of Slavonic oak (50 hl and 25 hl), and French oak (750 liters). This Rosso di Montalcino is produced only from grapes from the youngest vineyards. The grapes from the more than 10 year old vineyards are allowed to mature on oak for a few more years in order to produce the Brunello di Montalcino and their Riserva. The youngest vineyards have more abundant fruit and sweeter, more silky tannins, even after a year on wood.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a dark ruby red color with garnet reflections.
On the medium+ nose aromas of berries, cherries and raspberries with roasted hints.
On the palate dry, well balanced with medium+ acidity and tannins showing concentrated flavours of blackberries, compote, dark ripe cherries, vanilla and some earthy notes.
The Rosso goes well with pasta with meat sauces, soups, roasted meat dishes and ripe cheeses.
