Benjamin de Rothschild / Vega Sicilia - Macán Clásico Rioja 2010 (92 TSW)
Author: Goswijn Simons
Macan Classico is made from 100% Tempranillo from a 30-year-old vineyard. The wine stays 15 months in French oak (70% new and 30% used). After this upbringing, it has had bottle aging for another 2 years. The wine is issued in very small quantities and is limited available.
My tasting notes:
Decanted the wine with the Vspin
The wine shows a dark ruby red color with brownish rim.
On the medium+ nose loverly aromas of blackberries, licorice, mocha and tobacco with well integrated vanilla and spices.
On the palate dry, medium+ bodied, dense and concentrated with medium tannins and acidity showing a recall of the nose. The finish is long and persistence. Close to perfection!
Álvarez and the Rothschild invested around 26 million euros in the purchase and construction of 110 hectares of vineyards and the construction of a new production facility in Samaniego. A large part (65ha) of the vineyards is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, where people are known as Maçanes. It is therefore no coincidence that the new company bears the name Macán. It is interesting to note that Alvarez bought the vineyard from Fernando Remirez de Ganuza. The other top producer from the Rioja.
Macán brings two wines to the market, the Macán and the Macán Clásico, both a 100% Tempranillo full-blooded Rioja. The Clásico is the base wine, the Mácan the prestige cuvée, avoiding the term Reserva.
