Soellner - Grüner Veltliner Fumberg 2017 (89 TSW)
A solid and fresh Grüner from Wagram wine region? Yes sir!
From the terraces on Fumberg, which is exposed to the south, you have a stunning view on the Donau and up to the pre-Alps. This Veltliner is made from the best and mature berries from the vines on the vineyard Fumberg (2ha), which are deeply rooted. Grapes are selected, handpicked and carful pneumatically pressed. The must is fermented very slowly in large wooden barrels. After fermentation is finished the young wine is aged on lees to gain full character. When the full maturation is achieved the wine is bottled directly from the lees.
My tasting notes:
In the glass a pale citrus color.
On the medium+ nose aromas of pear, apple and peach with hints of jasmine, lemon, white pepper and tea.
On the palate dry, medium++ bodied with nice light waxy mouthfeel and medium acidity. Flavours of peach, red apples and butter with a medium light spicy aftertaste.
About the winery:
Dani and Toni Soellner make exquisite white wines on their small estate set on the rolling hills of the Wagram wine region which look out over the Danube river valley. Since 1995 they have pursued biodynamic winemaking and they also follow the Austrian government’s strict criteria for organic agriculture. Their respect for the natural environment continues in the winery where they seek to allow the pure character of Austria’s indigenous grape varieties to shine through.
This vibrant white makes for an excellent aperitif or accompaniment to seafood, fish and green salads.
