Visit Champagne Deutz 19 May

On Friday morning we left early in the morning by car heading towards the Champagne area. First we will visit Champagne Deutz in the Ay region of Champagne.  The house was founded in 1838 through the association of William Deutz with Pierre-Hubert Geldermann, both wine merchants from Aix-La Chapelle.

Deutz Champagne owns 42 hectares vineyards and a beautiful residence in Bellepoque style. Jean Lallier, sixth generation descendant of founder William Deutz guided us through the residence, the vineyards and the cellars.

We started with a strong coffee in one of the beautiful rooms where Jean Lallier talked about the history of the Deutz Family. Deutz produces 1,4 million bottles per year, with more than half a million magnums and many more 75cl size bottles, ranking among the top six champagne houses in terms of quality.

After enjoying the great story we left the residence through the garden and visited the wineyard close to the cellars with moren than 2 kilometers of corridors deep below the ground. The large cellars hollowed out in the limestone rocks are the deepest cellars of the Champagne.

Back from the cellars we had our first tasting. We tasted the Champagne Brut Classic, Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2010 and Champagne Brut Millésimé 2012.

After we enjoyed the tasting in the Chinese room we were invited for a great lunch with three other Champagnes:

Amour de Deutz 2007, William Deutz 2006 and Deutz Rosé Millesimé 2012. The rosé we paired with a Mousse légère a l’Ananas, Sorbet a L’Aamande. It was a perfect combination.

It was a perfect time at Deutz Champagne. Jean Lallier was the perfect host for this visit.
